Keys to House Cleaning: Simplicity & Organization

Written by

When you’re busy taking care of your family, keeping up with the cleaning can seem almost impossible! Maid services are a huge asset, but in between visits, there are certainly things you can do to make it easier on yourself.

Mom of two Robin Carpenter wrote about her experience with cleaning her house and shared what works for her. She says that for her, cleaning comes down to simplicity and organization. Here’s some advice for tackling house cleaning based on her tips:

Little Things

Robin only deep cleans once a month, which means she has to do more little things along the way to keep the house cleaner. Cleaning as you go is the number one way to put more time between deep cleanings.

It’s best if you can come up with a few jobs that you do every single day or once a week. Some suggestions include:

  • Washing all of the dirty dishes.
  • Wiping down the kitchen counters, stove, and sink.
  • Vacuuming once a week (twice in high-traffic areas!).
  • Wiping down the bathroom sink and counter.
  • Brushing out the toilet bowl.
  • Making beds.
  • General tidying.

If you do just a few things throughout the week, you can keep your home cleaner for longer—it’s all about maintenance!

Pre-Plan

Before you start cleaning a space, think about what you want to clean and in what order you want to clean it. For instance, if you’re going to dust, how are you going to dust? You’ll want to start from the top and work down, so where will you start? Are you going to tidy first or dust first?

Even if you don’t write it down, having a plan in mind will help keep you focused on the cleaning and lead to more task-oriented work, making you much more efficient—more efficient cleaning means you’re done faster, and that’s the goal!

Get the Family Involved

Everyone can do something to pitch in. Give everyone in the family one or two chores that are just theirs and that they are expected to do every day or every week. You might ask your spouse to wash the dishes or take out the trash every day, or you might ask your children to make their beds and clean their rooms. This will keep the house looking great for a lot longer and take some of the pressure off of just one or two people doing all the cleaning!
