Get Rid of Towel Smell

Written by

Washers do a spectacular job with cleaning, but do you find yourself throwing your towels away often because of that nasty odor that won't go away? Perhaps you have too many other house cleaning jobs to deal with? You begin to think that your dryer will eliminate the odor, once the towels are dry. But suddenly, you discover that it didn't do the trick. Unfortunately, the dryer did not solve the problem and the odor is still there.

You may have also attempted to wash them more than just once before tossing in the dryer, but it didn't seem to eliminate the problem, right? No matter how many times you wash those towels, no matter what type they are; the residues that get left behind build up. They continue to get built up every time you wash them. The buildup prevents water from penetrating deep inside the towels, which turns into missed areas that odors (bacteria) like to hide.

There is certainly a better way than throwing them out at the sign of sour-like smells. Why waste all that money when you don’t have to?

The first thing to do is wash in hot water. Mix 1 cup of vinegar in the hot water and never add laundry detergent or fabric softener. Exclusively use vinegar mainly because laundry room soap or fabric softeners can interfere with the vinegar. Upon completion, wash a second time with hot water. Just as before, do not add any laundry detergent or fabric softener. However, do add some baking soda (1/2 cup) to the wash. The moment the load is completed, merely toss them in the clothes dryer and voila! Once dry, you will have towels as good as new, unless they have stains of course.

Please note that if you are continually having issues with smells on your linens, it could be the automatic washer. Utilize washing machine freshener to clear out the smells belonging to the washing machine. Some come in tablet style. Make sure to follow the directions completely because this is not a normal load. Follow your manufacturer's guidelines to ensure no damage occurs to the machine. If you do not have instructions, you can usually download them from the manufacturer's website, or use a search engine to find them.
